The Becky Smith Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Becky Smith. Becky grew up in Cortland, Ohio, and was a 1999 honors graduate of Lakeview High School. She continued her education at Kent State University and earned a cum laude Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design in 2003.
Becky worked in a few different local positions but ultimately decided to go to Youngstown State University for her Master's of Arts degree with a certificate in applied history. Becky had many interests and passions. She began dancing when she was in elementary school, then continued on to Kent State's dance team and even spent a year dancing for the Youngstown SteelHounds. She enjoyed traveling, music, design and fashion, plus she did volunteer work for Cortland's historic district and for a few groups involved in the revitalization of Warren, Ohio.
While attending YSU, she was so excited to have an internship with Youngstown's CityScape. After graduation, Becky was able to turn her interest in historic preservation into a successful career. In 2008, her experiences took her to Butler, Pennsylvania, where she held the title of Main Street Manager, working with the Chamber of Commerce and Butler Downtown. Becky was a leader of five volunteer committees who have various responsibilities such as organizing downtown interests, attracting new businesses and developing a new vigor in the Butler community. She worked tirelessly on several projects including a downtown Jeep festival, trolley tours and having murals painted to make the city look more appealing.
Becky's dream was not just to save historic buildings, but to bring them back to life. She wanted Butler, along with the downtowns of the Mahoning Valley to be bustling with shoppers, restaurants, residences and activities.
Becky's life was abruptly cut short at the age of 30 after being injured in an automobile accident. Her family decided this scholarship would be a good way to continue some of Becky's hopes and plans. Her family hopes the recipients of this award will be able to accomplish some of the things Becky wasn't given the time to do, whether it be in the Mahoning Valley, Western Pennsylvania or any city that they love.
All applications must be received no later than October 31 and March 31 for subsequent semester awards (Spring and Fall). The 2016 fall semester application deadline is March 31, 2016. The application form is available for two institutions:
